Exhibition selection Concept Text by
The process of selecting images for this exhibition was undertaken by five artists on residency here at Listhus. None of us were familiar with the phenomenon of David Shankbone, yet learning about him and sifting through his images acted as an icebreaker as it was our first time for most of us to meet each other.
Between us we narrowed down the photos, not to form any particular narrative or a clear statement, but rather chose images we found to be interesting or humorous. Whereas a lot of the images we excluded were easily imaginable as the title image on a Wikipedia page, the ones we have chosen are less descript, they don’t necessarily call to mind any particular person, place, or issue, and seen together in sequence they seem quite meaningless.
Our choice of curation has been basic: we simply split the ten images we chose into two groups of five, portrait and landscape, with the frames positioned quite closely together. These tight groupings form quite a distinct and clear presence in the gallery space, however on closer inspection of the images this initial clarity is revealed to be utter nonsense.
